Helsinki’s very first kite festival, Leijafestivaali, was organized yesterday 22nd August 2015 at Kaivopuisto park. It was one of those events that make you love Helsinki more, and the people in it. Behind the event are three friends of mine, who fell in love with kites and started to dream of making their very own kite festival in Helsinki, so that everyone could fly a kite and feel the joy and sense of freedom that comes along.
Yesterday the dream became reality, when almost 7 000 people gathered at Kaivopuisto to fly kite, watch the kite flying displays directed by Chinese Zhiping Liu, make their own kites at the workshops and just to enjoy the sunny summer weather and have picnic with friends. I heard many people saying that it was the very first time they flied a kite, and I just loved to see the huge smiles on their faces (both kids’ and adults’) while watching their own kite fly.
